Hoare Lea has an incredible reputation in engineering consultancy, but there is a concern that they are only known for their urban landscapes.
Working with RHS Bridgewater on the Welcome Building has been a fantastic way to align to the company ethos of 'human-centric and planet-conscious design'.
#1 / IT MAKES HUMAN SENSE
This film is about design and its relationship with the human senses.
We would like to explore the human senses and how humans, as creators, design with senses at the forefront of the user experience.
In cinematic and poetic terms we would like to create a beautiful spoken word piece of writing that explores this relationship between design and human senses.
We all have our own particular spectrum of senses; no one else can sense someone else's level of smell, or what their eyesight is truly like. It's these individual characteristics that we lean on when working as a collective.
Gardens are a space where all your senses are engaged, and one designed with senses in mind has even more fitting.
We would like to set beautiful shots across the perfect times of day that showcase the beauty in design, accessibility and opportunity at RHS Bridgewater.
Particular compositions are set to enable with playful annotations of a hand drawn quality to highlight certain features as we explore the site.
#2 / COMMUNITY PORTRAITS
This concept showcases a diverse selection of beautifully shot portraits of the community that uses and celebrates the site accompanied by a script that explores all the uses of the project and the breadth of impact that it was on those particular individuals.
Set, wide shots that show off buildings, and landscape but position each member of the community in the centre, softly lit and a camera move that pulls back each time revealing more of the scenes as we work our way through the film, demonstrating our relationship with nature and how we nurture that.

#3 / SENSE OF SPACE
In this concept, we will emphasise the sheer scale of the project, with a focus on the senses, textures and intricacies of the design.
We will start the piece with super close-up shots highlighting the intricate details of both the architecture as well as the nature outside, juxtaposing the building with the garden by cutting back and forth between the two.
These shots will gradually get wider, revealing more of the building and gardens, as well as the communities using the space, before unveiling the full scale of the project.
The colours, shapes and patterns of plants can inhibit different emotions in us and help us to feel calm and recharged so we will carefully plan our shots with this in mind and pair these visuals with a rich and soothing soundscape to stimulate the senses and replicate the tranquil feel the place evokes and the sensory experience of actually being there.
This piece could work with or without a spoken word v/o by either Tayshan Hayden-smith, or their therapeutic gardener Ozichi Brewster.
Alt approach
An alternative version of this concept could see us invite a cast of people to the garden with different disabilities or lack of a sense (eg blind, deaf).
This won’t be fully revealed until the end, but the piece will explore how accessible and enjoyable the gardens are for everyone. For instance, one person could talk about the sounds and how it makes them feel, while another person talks about the beauty and the feel of different textures.
